New Delhi: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a police inquiry into allegations made by opposition leaders in the reported theft of offerings from the Ayodhya Ram temple.
VHP international president Alok Kumar, in a letter to Ayodhya DSP Ashutosh Tiwari, said leaders including Congress MP Priyanka, AAP national convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav have made various claims in public. He urged police to question them on what evidence they have and where they obtained their information.
Kumar said that if the leaders provide credible material, it could aid the investigation. However, if it is found that allegations were made without evidence and were deliberately false, legal action should be taken, the letter said.
The case has triggered nationwide attention. A Special Investigation Team has arrested eight people, while separate probes are being conducted by the SIT and Ayodhya police.
Amid the developments, a key meeting of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust, which oversees temple administration, is scheduled for today. Reports said general secretary Champat Rai has submitted a resignation letter taking moral responsibility, and trustee Anil Mishra has also tendered his resignation; a decision on the resignations may be taken at the meeting.
