Registration Department officials in Tamil Nadu have begun a public awareness campaign to encourage home and land buyers to register documents without paying bribes.
Complaints have long alleged that money is demanded for routine work at sub-registrar offices. While steps were taken to curb bribery, the practice is said to have continued through document writers and agents.
With a change in government in the state, the department has issued multiple instructions aimed at preventing illegal collections, including measures such as engaging with visitors and explaining procedures. In this backdrop, the Registration Department Officials Association has started outreach on how to complete registrations without paying anyone.
Association representatives said that in recent years, sub-registrars seeking transfers were allegedly forced to pay bribes at various levels. They claimed that 132 sub-registrars have now received transfers without any collection, and officials have instructed staff not to pressure the public for bribes.
As part of the campaign, citizens are being advised to avoid the belief that registration requires bribery, arrive on time for their allotted slot, allow reasonable time for staff to process requests without rushing them, and follow the procedures under the newly introduced “STAR 3.0” software.
