Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jakarta on Sunday, beginning the first leg of his overseas tour to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to July 11.

Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto personally welcomed Modi at the Jakarta airport. A formal reception was held, with ministers and officials present, and the President introduced them to the Prime Minister.

Modi also watched cultural performances organised as part of the welcome and applauded the artistes.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said he was moved by the President’s gesture at the airport. He recalled that in 2018 the two countries elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which he said has benefited people in both nations.

Modi said he and President Prabowo would hold discussions to further energise bilateral relations across sectors. He added that they would visit the Prambanan temple in Yogyakarta, highlighting close cultural links, and that he looked forward to interacting with the Indian-origin community in Indonesia. After completing the Indonesia visit, Modi is scheduled to travel to Australia and New Zealand.
