Colombo: A violent clash inside Sri Lanka’s Negombo prison on the outskirts of Colombo has left 25 people dead, including four police officers, officials said. More than 100 others were injured and are receiving treatment.
The violence reportedly began after a confrontation erupted between two groups of inmates. As tensions escalated, women prisoners climbed onto the prison roof and staged a protest, while the situation remained volatile for a second consecutive day on July 6.
Prison authorities have been working to restore calm amid continuing unrest. Security has been tightened in and around the facility, and officials said the situation is being closely monitored.
Preliminary inquiries indicate the clashes may be linked to disputes between a group allegedly supporting drug-smuggling activities inside the prison and another group opposing it. As part of efforts to stabilise the situation, three inmates have been transferred to another prison.
