Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he closely follows Modi’s work and implements many of his schemes.

Speaking at a luncheon hosted for the visiting Indian Prime Minister in Jakarta, Prabowo said he had no hesitation in admitting that he adopts several of Modi’s initiatives. He noted that the programmes have been successful for millions of people.

Prabowo said India has achieved significant progress and that implementing similar schemes in Indonesia has also been yielding results. He added that he was glad there is “no copyright” over any programme and welcomed Modi and his team, calling the visit an important milestone in bilateral ties.

He also spoke about cultural links, saying a sizeable share of words in the Indonesian language are derived from Sanskrit and that many people’s names are Sanskrit in origin. Prabowo said Indonesia’s national emblem, the Garuda, is rooted in Indian or Hindu mythology and culture, and added that history has connected the two nations while both share a forward-looking vision.

The Indonesian President’s open praise for Modi drew attention in Jakarta, as the two leaders held talks earlier in the day that he described as useful.
