Chennai: Governor Rajendra Arlekar is learnt to have decided to seek an explanation from the ThaVeKa government over allegations of “horse-trading” involving MLAs, according to Raj Bhavan sources.
The issue traces back to May 7, when Chief Minister Vijay, the ThaVeKa leader, met the Governor to stake claim to form the government. Around the same time, AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran alleged that ThaVeKa had lured away his party’s lone MLA.
After ThaVeKa formed the government, six AIADMK MLAs reportedly resigned their posts and joined ThaVeKa. The AIADMK has since accused ThaVeKa of attempting to attract more MLAs, while the DMK has also claimed that efforts were being made to poach its legislators.
On July 4, functionaries from the AIADMK, DMK and BJP met the Governor and urged immediate steps to prevent alleged horse-trading by the ThaVeKa government.
Raj Bhavan sources said the Governor is considering seeking an explanation under Article 167 of the Constitution, in connection with MLAs resigning and joining ThaVeKa.
