Heavy southwest monsoon rains have intensified across Maharashtra, with Pune district facing severe weather after days of downpour in Mumbai. While Mumbai saw a slight easing on Monday, several parts of Pune continued to receive intense rain.
In Lonavala, a popular hill station in Pune district, officials recorded 67 cm of rainfall over the last 24 hours. The spell has led to multiple incidents of slope failure across the district.
Reports said 22 locations in Pune district witnessed major landslides over the past two days. Railway tracks were damaged in some stretches, forcing a halt in movement.
Railway monitoring staff stationed at vulnerable points issued timely warnings, and no train was caught in a landslide. Traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway was also disrupted, and a ‘red alert’ has been issued for the district’s hilly regions for Tuesday as well.
