Tense Round-of-16 in Vancouver
Switzerland booked a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout, following a goalless match in Vancouver, Canada.
No breakthrough in regulation time
Both teams pushed for an opener from the start, but clear chances were kept out. Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a key save to deny a Colombia effort, while Colombia’s defence and keeper also held firm to stop Swiss attempts.
Extra time drama, still no goal
The intensity continued in extra time, with Colombia coming close when a header struck the post, raising the tension among fans. Despite sustained pressure and end-to-end moments, neither side could find the net across 120 minutes.
Kobel shines in shootout
In the shootout, Kobel made a crucial stop against Cucho Hernandez’s penalty. Switzerland then sealed the win when Ruben Vargas converted the decisive kick, sending the Swiss into the last eight.
Historic quarterfinal and Argentina next
The result marks Switzerland’s first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 1954, ending a long wait. They are set to meet defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on July 17 (Saturday).
