Chennai: To tackle frequent power cuts in specific localities, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has launched a new initiative aimed at permanently preventing repeat outages.
According to the Board, recurring equipment faults at certain substations and power lines have been triggering repeated interruptions, causing significant hardship to residents.
Electricity Board Chairman Radhakrishnan has instructed regional chief engineers to implement the programme, referred to as RTEP, focused on eliminating repeated power disconnections.
Under the plan, engineers must identify substations, feeders and transformers that have seen repeated outages over the past six months. They have been asked to record how often outages occurred, their duration, the number of consumers affected, whether essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions were impacted, and whether seasonal or weather factors played a role.
A dedicated register will be maintained for this purpose. Based on the findings, the Board will take corrective steps such as setting up new substations, adding transformers, and replacing old electrical equipment in affected locations.
