India and Australia have signed a key nuclear cooperation agreement that will enable Australia to supply uranium to India over the long term, aimed at supporting India’s nuclear power generation and clean energy targets.

The agreement was signed in Melbourne in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, on the sidelines of the third India–Australia summit. Speaking to reporters, Modi said the pact would give fresh momentum to India’s clean energy plans.

Modi is on an official tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. After visiting Indonesia—where he was welcomed by President Prabowo Subianto and multiple sectoral agreements were signed—he arrived in Australia as the second stop of the trip.

Albanese said the decision to export uranium to India is for peaceful use and is based on the nuclear cooperation framework agreed between the two countries in 2015.

Beyond nuclear energy, the two sides also signed agreements to strengthen security cooperation and to streamline supply chains for critical minerals, according to the joint announcements.
