Chennai’s Triplicane police have questioned two doctors from Namakkal district’s Mohanur and Tiruppur district’s Kangeyam in a case alleging attempts to bargain with TVK MLAs, police sources said.
The case stems from a complaint by Uthangarai TVK MLA Ilaiyaraja, who alleged that there was an effort to destabilise the TVK government and move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker by offering inducements to MLAs, with amounts said to go up to Rs 35 crore.
Based on the complaint, Triplicane police registered a case against 10 people, including former DMK minister Senthil Balaji. Nine people — including Tirunavukkarasu from Chennai’s Arumbakkam, Naresh from Tiruchy and Thyagarajan from Chennai’s Medavakkam — have been arrested. A court granted bail to Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok Kumar.
In the latest development, police arrested Dr Ramesh Kumar, who runs a clinic in Mohanur, and brought him to Chennai for questioning. Another person, Rajasekar from Kangeyam, was also taken along, and police sources claimed Rs 50 lakh in cash was seized.
After the questioning, Dr Ramesh Kumar returned to his hometown. Police did not confirm whether Rajasekar was formally arrested.
