Complaints of illegal collections at police checkposts on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala corridor prompted raids by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Friday. The checkposts at Bodimettu, Mundal, Kambamettu and Kumily are on a key route where vehicles are screened.
According to officials, vehicles allegedly carrying minerals and livestock without proper documents were being allowed to pass after money was collected, without thorough checks. DVAC teams carried out inspections early in the morning to verify whether vehicle movements were properly recorded in registers.
At around 6.30 am, a team led by Dindigul DVAC DSP Nagaraj, along with Theni Inspector Rameswari, inspected the Bodimettu checkpost. Another team, in the presence of Dindigul Inspector Roopa Seetharani, checked the Mundal checkpost, including seats, tables, rooms and bags kept on the premises.
DVAC officials seized unaccounted cash of Rs 5,790 from Bodimettu and Rs 3,500 from Mundal, totalling Rs 9,290. Separately, at the Gudalur–Kumily outpost police station, a raid led by DVAC Inspector Palanisamy from 6.00 am to 11.45 am resulted in the seizure of Rs 26,440, taking the total to Rs 35,730.
DVAC said inquiries are under way and departmental action would be initiated. Departmental action was also recommended against the staff on duty at the outpost police station, including S.S.I. Ayyappan and constables Arulraj and Bhaskaran.
