New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said that E20 petrol—petrol blended with 20% ethanol—will not cause damage or defects in vehicles, addressing concerns raised after its nationwide rollout.

The Centre introduced E20 across India from April 1, aiming to support environmental protection and reduce the country’s crude oil import bill. However, criticism emerged that higher ethanol blending could affect older engines and reduce fuel efficiency.

In a statement, the ministry said E20 is a cleaner, higher-quality and more efficient fuel than E10, and that it was introduced only after years of scientific trials, consultations with vehicle manufacturers and expansion of domestic ethanol production.

It added that E20 underwent detailed checks on engine life, fuel-system compatibility, corrosion resistance and drivability before being rolled out nationwide. The ministry acknowledged that fuel economy could fall by up to 35% in some vehicles.

At the same time, it said the higher octane level can reduce unwanted engine noise and vibrations, and deliver benefits such as better pickup, smoother acceleration, cleaner engine operation and lower carbon emissions. The ministry said leading vehicle manufacturers have certified that E20 does not reduce component life or cause abnormal wear, and urged consumers not to be misled by misinformation.
