Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said hydrogen fuel would be the future of India’s transport sector, as the Centre steps up efforts to promote cleaner mobility.
Speaking at an event in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Gadkari said hydrogen can help reduce environmental pollution and also lower dependence on imported petrol and diesel. He added that the government is already working on measures to expand the use of alternative fuels.
He noted that India is performing strongly in the alternative and bio-fuel space and could take a global lead in technology and cost. As part of this push, the Centre is conducting hydrogen-fuel trials on 10 routes across the country.
The corridors include Greater Noida–Delhi–Agra; Bhubaneswar–Konark–Puri; Ahmedabad–Vadodara–Surat; Sahibabad–Faridabad–Delhi; Pune–Mumbai; Jamshedpur–Kalinga Nagar; Thiruvananthapuram–Kochi; Kochi–Edappally; Jamnagar–Ahmedabad; and Visakhapatnam–Biyyavaram. Gadkari said the trials are aimed at strengthening clean public transport.
