Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the free trade agreement between India and New Zealand as a “historic milestone”, saying it would give fresh momentum to ties between the two countries.
Modi, who is on a visit to New Zealand, held talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Following the discussions, the two leaders witnessed the signing of memorandums of understanding between the two sides.
Speaking after a ceremonial welcome at the Government House in Auckland, Modi said he was honoured by the reception. He noted that the traditional Māori pōwhiri ceremony reflected New Zealand’s rich heritage and traditions.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation aimed at global peace, stability and security. He also said it was a moment of joy to be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit New Zealand in 40 years, and thanked New Zealanders for their affection towards India.
