A 21-year-old medical student from Kerala was allegedly murdered in Uzbekistan after she was pressured to convert her religion. Her body was later brought back to her hometown in Alappuzha district and cremated.
The victim, identified as Savarya, daughter of Basanth and Mini from Harippad in Alappuzha, was pursuing MBBS at a medical college in Uzbekistan. A fellow student, Sadarul Anam (21) from Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district, was also studying there, and both were staying in the college hostel.
According to information received by the family, the incident occurred on July 3, when Savarya was allegedly assaulted and killed with a laptop. Her relatives immediately travelled to Uzbekistan after learning about the death.
During the investigation, it was found that she had been forced to convert and was beaten to death, following which local police in Uzbekistan arrested the accused. After a post-mortem there, the body was flown to Alappuzha.
A second post-mortem was conducted at the Alappuzha Government Medical College Hospital, and the cremation was held in the garden of her house. The family has also filed a complaint with the Harippad police against Sadarul Anam.
