The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 100 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu, marking the first such expansion in the state in five years.
The additional seats have been sanctioned for two government institutions — Namakkal Government Medical College Hospital and the Government Medical College in Tiruppur — with 50 seats each. With this, the MBBS intake in both colleges will rise from 100 to 150.
The newly added seats will also be covered under the 7.5% reservation meant for eligible government school students, offering them greater access to medical education.
According to the report, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board had issued permission letters to the Namakkal and Tiruppur colleges in 2019, after which both were affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
Tamil Nadu last saw an MBBS seat increase in 2021, when 11 new medical colleges were opened and Coimbatore Medical College received an additional 50 seats. The latest approval comes after a five-year gap.
