A Cyprus-registered merchant vessel travelling near Oman through the Strait of Hormuz came under attack by Iran, according to official statements. The ship caught fire following the strike.

The vessel had 11 Indians on board. As the fire spread, the crew jumped into the sea; 10 were rescued, while one Indian is still missing and search efforts are under way.

In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack and said targeting commercial shipping in the region is unacceptable. The ministry noted that such incidents add to tensions in an already volatile area.

The MEA urged immediate de-escalation and called for diplomatic engagement and dialogue to restore peace and stability. It also stressed that attacks on commercial vessels and infrastructure must stop, shipping should move without obstruction, and international law must be respected.
