Vietnamese police have arrested the captain of a tourist boat that capsized near Phu Quoc island, an incident that claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists.

The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists, three Vietnamese staff members and a tour guide when it overturned at sea on July 11. Authorities said 15 Indian passengers drowned, while 21 people, including remaining Indian tourists, were rescued safely.

Police in southern An Giang province took the 57-year-old captain into custody and are questioning him as part of the ongoing probe into the accident.

India’s embassy said 15 Indian tourists who survived have been discharged from hospital and are returning home. One person remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Phu Quoc.

The embassy added that the bodies of the 15 victims will be brought to India soon. Following the accident, local media reported that several tour operators have suspended inter-island high-speed boat services.
