India has retained the third position for the fifth consecutive year in the 2026 ranking of the world’s most powerful air forces, according to a list released by WDMMA.
The study evaluated 129 air services across 103 countries and examined more than 48,000 military aircraft worldwide. Rankings were based on factors such as fleet size, aircraft technology, logistics and overall operational capability.
The United States topped the list, followed by Russia in second place. Among India’s neighbours, China was placed seventh and Pakistan eighteenth.
The Indian Air Force operates a total of 1,716 aircraft, including 542 fighter and attack aircraft. While China has a larger fleet with 3,733 aircraft, the ranking notes India’s strength in terms of quality and modern technology.
India’s inventory also includes 498 helicopters—among them 222 Mi-17s and 111 indigenously built HAL Dhruv and Rudra variants—along with 282 transport aircraft, 374 trainers and 20 special-mission platforms for early warning, intelligence gathering and aerial refuelling.
