Remarks in Salem

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday criticised Chief Minister Vijay, saying he continues to speak “like in cinema dialogues” even after assuming office. He alleged that the ruling TVK came to power through “reels” rather than public service.

Counter to ‘thieves’ charge

Palaniswami said Vijay had labelled both the DMK and AIADMK as “thieves”. He countered by alleging that it was Vijay who “poached” AIADMK MLAs, and claimed the Chief Minister was the one who should be blamed.

Karur incident and Centre’s role

Referring to the Karur incident in which 41 people died, Palaniswami questioned who did not visit the affected and instead rushed to Chennai, and who kept the party shut for 15 days. He also alleged that the party leader stayed indoors for 72 days.

He said a case related to the Karur incident is before the Supreme Court and that a CBI probe is under way. He further claimed the Centre is “watching” the TVK government and that the administration could be shaken easily.

Appointments and governance allegations

Palaniswami alleged that posts were given to individuals linked to a film producer and to Vijay’s adviser, and sarcastically claimed even the Chief Minister’s make-up artist could be given a post in the coming days. He also alleged that under the TVK government, illegal activities such as drug culture, murder, robbery and sexual crimes have increased.

He claimed Vijay made numerous promises assuming he would not win, and is now struggling due to lack of funds. Palaniswami further alleged that the TVK government is running on the support of DMK alliance parties, who could withdraw support at any time.
