The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has warned of filing a defamation case seeking Rs 100 crore against Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, unless he withdraws and apologises for remarks alleging attempts to poach National Conference (NC) legislators.
Omar Abdullah, who leads the NC government in Jammu and Kashmir, made the allegation while addressing a public meeting at Hazratbal in Srinagar. He claimed the BJP was trying to create a split within his party and topple the government.
According to his statement, a BJP functionary allegedly approached an NC MLA and negotiated an offer that went up to Rs 30 crore, along with assurances of ministerial positions and other benefits.
The BJP has denied the allegations, calling them false and baseless, and said they damage the party’s reputation. A legal notice, issued on the directions of BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir state president Satpal Sharma, demands that Omar Abdullah retract the आरोप in writing and issue an unconditional public apology within seven days.
The notice states that if he fails to comply, the party will initiate civil and criminal proceedings and seek Rs 100 crore in damages for defamation.
