Vigilance and Anti-Corruption police conducted a surprise raid at the Transport Department check post at K.K. Chavadi near Coimbatore, seizing Rs 1.25 lakh in unaccounted cash in a single night.
According to the report, the check post is a key crossing point for vehicles heading towards Kerala, with thousands of commercial and tourist vehicles passing daily from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Drivers allegedly pay small bribes to get documents stamped, even when temporary permits are obtained online.
Acting on information that bribes were being collected by stopping vehicles, a team led by Inspector Prabhudas carried out the raid around 4.45 am on Tuesday. During the operation, Rs 1.18 lakh was reportedly recovered as unaccounted money.
Motor Vehicle Inspector Aruldas and assistants Kalpana and Padma were questioned in connection with the seizure. Separately, Rs 7,000 was seized at the check post for vehicles coming towards Coimbatore, and Motor Vehicle Inspector Kalinga was questioned.
The total seizure of Rs 1.25 lakh has raised concerns about alleged routine bribery at check posts, with calls for stronger measures to curb such practices.
