Chennai Police have shared documents related to the alleged “Thawega government-toppling” case with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), officials said. The ED is expected to begin its probe based on the material provided.
The case stems from an allegation that a deal was offered to Uthangarai constituency Thawega MLA Ilaiyaraja, promising Rs 35 crore. Triplicane police have registered a case and are continuing the investigation.
So far, 11 people, including Chennai resident Thirunavukkarasu, have been arrested. During the probe, police said they found indications of a link in the background to former DMK minister Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok Kumar.
Police also seized Rs 60 lakh in unaccounted cash from the house of one of the arrested persons, raising suspicion of possible hawala transactions. Separately, based on mobile call details of the arrested accused, Triplicane police are questioning four more people, including Madurai-based Ganesan and Raghu.
Earlier, ED officials had written to Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraju seeking details, following which the documents were handed over. Investigators expect the ED to speed up its inquiry in the coming days.
