An Indian seafarer was killed and 10 others were injured after Iranian forces attacked two vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to details cited by the Union government.

The incident comes amid renewed tensions between Iran and the United States in West Asia. In this backdrop, Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz, and the ships identified as MT El Bahiyak and MT Mombasa were attacked while passing through the route.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said it summoned Iran’s deputy envoy in New Delhi on Tuesday morning and conveyed India’s strong condemnation of the attack.

India said it strongly denounces assaults that target seafarers and disrupt safe, uninterrupted movement through international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry also expressed concern over the resumption and escalation of hostilities in the region.

Calling for de-escalation, the MEA urged an immediate end to violence and a return to dialogue and diplomatic efforts to ensure peace, security and stability.
