Tehran has become the focus of fresh international attention after Russia sent an advanced airborne command aircraft to Iran as emergency support, according to reports.
The move comes as tensions between Iran and the United States have flared again, raising concerns of a wider confrontation in West Asia. In this backdrop, Moscow has stepped up military assistance to Tehran.
The aircraft sent is the Tu-214PU, described as an airborne command centre used by Russia’s president and senior military leadership to direct operations during emergencies while remaining in the air. Observers view the deployment as a direct warning signal to the United States and Israel.
Though it resembles a regular passenger plane, the Tu-214PU is equipped with technology designed to maintain secure military command even if ground communications are fully disrupted, using satellite links and advanced radio frequencies.
The aircraft is reported to have a top speed of about 850 kmph and an operational range of up to 6,500 km.
