Tehran: Tensions between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical maritime trade corridors—have intensified, with both sides making competing claims of control.
US President Donald Trump said the United States has “taken over” management of the strait and that vessels passing through it would be charged a fee. He added that the US Navy would provide security for ships using the route.
Trump also alleged that Iran had violated multiple agreements in the past and said there is currently no ceasefire arrangement. He framed the proposed charges as a way to recover the costs of ensuring safety in what he described as a highly tense region.
In a separate statement, Trump said the US would be regarded as the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz and announced a 20% levy on all cargo shipped through the passage, with procedures to begin immediately. He further claimed the strait would remain open and said a renewed “Iranian blockade” would restrict only Iranian ships and customers, while other countries could use the route without obstruction.
