Aavin plans to sell milk through automated vending machines on a pilot basis in Ooty and Kodaikanal, instead of distributing milk in plastic pouches. The dairy cooperative informed the Madras High Court about the proposed move.

The development came during hearings on a petition seeking strict enforcement of the plastic ban in hill stations such as Ooty and Kodaikanal. A special bench comprising Justices N. Sathish Kumar and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy directed authorities to find alternatives to plastic pouches for milk distribution.

In its report to the court, Aavin said automated vending machines would be reintroduced for milk supply. The machines are planned to be installed in densely populated areas of Ooty and Kodaikanal as part of the trial.

Aavin said it would procure two machines from a private company based in Uttar Pradesh and that necessary permissions for installation have been obtained. After the machines are set up, wholesalers, agents and traders will be instructed not to supply milk in pouches to nearby homes and hotels, and pouch-based sales will be stopped in those areas.
