Former DMK minister and Tiruvannamalai MLA EV Velu appeared before the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in Chennai on July 15 for questioning in connection with a highways department irregularities case.

The case relates to allegations that during the previous DMK regime, a fraud of Rs 3.23 crore occurred in Karur by claiming road-laying work without actually laying the road. DVAC police have registered a case against 11 people, including Velu and nine highways department engineers.

As part of the probe, DVAC conducted searches on June 25 at 20 locations, including Velu’s residence in Alwarpet, Chennai, and said several key documents were seized.

DVAC had earlier issued a summons asking Velu to appear in person on July 3, but he did not attend. His lawyers said he was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.

The Madras High Court subsequently directed Velu to appear before DVAC on July 15. Following the court order, he presented himself at the DVAC office for inquiry.
