Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Teofil Bartoszewski has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped avert a nuclear strike by Russia on Ukraine in 2022 by speaking directly to President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi after attending a meeting of the India–Poland Joint Economic Commission, Bartoszewski described Modi as a widely respected global leader and pointed to India’s long-standing relationship with Russia.

He said Putin “actually listens” to what Modi conveys, and argued that the Indian Prime Minister had already demonstrated this influence during a critical phase of the Russia–Ukraine war.

According to Bartoszewski, it was Modi’s intervention with Putin that prevented Russia from carrying out a nuclear attack on Ukraine in 2022.
