The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest petition that sought the creation of district-wise “revenue government TV channels” in Tamil Nadu to broadcast state schemes and department-wise decisions.

The petition was filed by Vijayapandiyan from Tamil Nadu, who argued that people do not fully receive information about what is happening across various government departments and therefore dedicated channels should be set up in every district.

Hearing the matter, Chief Justice Suryakant, along with Justices Jaymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, asked the petitioner why he could not approach the newly formed government in Tamil Nadu on the issue.

The Bench observed that people in Tamil Nadu are clear-minded and well-educated, and that the influence of social media is significant. It noted that television is not the only means to access information and added that administrative functioning in the state is effective at various levels.

Stating that the demand involved a policy decision of the government, the court said it did not wish to intervene. The petition was dismissed, while the petitioner was advised to take up the request with the appropriate state authorities.
