The Tamil Nadu government has announced a six-month extension for Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, whose tenure was set to end on August 31.

Sai Kumar was appointed as Chief Secretary on April 8, after Muruganandam was replaced while the Assembly election model code of conduct was in force. Despite several transfers of senior IAS and police officials after the formation of the TVK government led by Vijay, the Chief Secretary’s post was not changed.

Ahead of the scheduled end of his term, the state government had written to the Union government seeking an extension for Sai Kumar. The extension has now been approved and announced.

A 1990-batch IAS officer, Sai Kumar has served as district collector of Madurai, Virudhunagar and Dharmapuri. He has also held key roles including Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation, Commissioner of Municipal Administration, and Secretary in the Public Works Department, among others.
