The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Supreme Court that it has no objection to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the murder of Armstrong, former Tamil Nadu president of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
Armstrong was killed in Chennai on July 5, 2024. While the state police were investigating the case, his wife Porkodi approached the Madras High Court seeking transfer of the probe to the CBI, alleging political interference and a lack of impartiality.
Accepting the plea, the High Court ordered that the case be handed over to the CBI. The then DMK government challenged this order before the Supreme Court and sought a stay on the CBI investigation.
After a change in government in Tamil Nadu, the Vijay-led TVK administration has now filed an intervention petition in the Supreme Court stating it will withdraw the earlier appeal and does not oppose the CBI inquiry. The stay plea is listed for hearing on July 22, and the state’s latest stand is expected to clear the way for the CBI to continue its investigation.
