Islamabad: A letter circulating on social media has triggered fresh debate by claiming that Pakistan’s largest province, Balochistan, has unilaterally declared itself an independent country.

The message, issued in the name of the “Republic of Balochistan,” says the Baloch Liberation movement has “won freedom” from Pakistan and is now functioning as a separate state. It also claims the launch of a national flag, a national anthem and a new currency named “Balochi Balus.”

The letter further alleges that Baloch and Pashtun personnel serving in Pakistan’s security forces have resigned and joined the movement. It adds that around 500,000 fighters are said to be preparing to “expel Pakistan completely” by the end of this year.

It calls on the United Nations, India and other countries to recognise Balochistan’s independence and to allow the opening of an embassy in New Delhi. However, despite the long-running separatist campaign, Balochistan has not legally become a new state, and no country has officially recognised it so far.
