Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai on July 15 to discuss coordinated steps against drug trafficking and organised drug networks.

Chennithala said Kerala’s newly formed Congress government, led by Chief Minister Satheesan, has intensified its crackdown through an initiative named “Operation Dhooban”. He briefed the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on the programme and its progress.

According to the minister, over the past 43 days Kerala Police have arrested more than 6,000 drug sellers, registered 5,500 cases and jailed over 100 accused. He added that the government has also seized properties linked to those involved in drug sales.

He said a broader action plan to “wage war” on the drug mafia has been prepared and discussed with CM Vijay, who assured full cooperation. The minister added that surveillance along the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border would be strengthened.

Separately, the Tamil Nadu government has directed the Prohibition Enforcement Wing to intensify checks at neighbouring state borders to prevent illegal liquor being brought in from states including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry for sale in Tamil Nadu.
