The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai has extended an orange alert as a heatwave is expected to affect Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and Thursday.
In its bulletin, the weather office said maximum temperatures across most parts of the state—including coastal areas—as well as Puducherry and Karaikal could rise by up to 4°C above normal. It warned that the conditions may cause health-related discomfort.
For Wednesday, heatwave conditions are forecast in Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Madurai districts.
On Thursday, heatwave conditions may occur at one or two places in Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Namakkal and Erode districts. Light rain is likely over the Western Ghats districts on Wednesday, with moderate rain possible on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the bulletin noted that a low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal along the Odisha–West Bengal coast.
