A heated confrontation broke out at the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation council meeting on July 17, triggering chaos inside the hall.
According to reports, Congress councillor Gayathri attempted to raise allegations related to the Semmozhi Park issue soon after the meeting began and also tried to confront Mayor Ranganayaki. DMK councillors and the mayor objected, leading to a sharp exchange.
The argument quickly escalated into a physical scuffle between DMK and Congress members. Women councillors were seen clashing with each other, while shouting and confusion disrupted the proceedings.
In the immediate aftermath, the mayor announced a two-month suspension for five councillors—Gayathri and four Communist councillors: Ramamoorthi, Boopathi, Prabha and Shanthi. However, after the meeting was adjourned for an hour, Mayor Ranganayaki revised the decision, announcing that only Gayathri would be suspended for two months, with no action taken against the Communist councillors.
