Karur has witnessed a controversy after a Congress poster described Chief Minister Vijay as “the Lord’s angel” and Karur MP Jyothimani as “Mariyamman” while thanking them for action related to inam lands.

The issue centres on 3,084 acres of inam lands said to belong to temples in Karur district. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has issued an order removing the registration ban on these lands.

The move has drawn opposition from the BJP and Hindu organisations, and a case has also been filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

Amid this, a poster put up in the name of Karur district Youth Congress president Keerthan Periyasamy thanked “Chief Minister Joseph Vijay” for resolving the long-pending inam land issue and praised MP Jyothimani for standing by as support.

Critics have alleged that using religious references such as “angel” and “Mariyamman” in a dispute involving Hindu temple lands amounts to insulting Hindu deities and hurting Hindu sentiments, leading to the current row.
