Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Arlekar has appealed to the public to actively participate in the 2027 population census and extend full cooperation to census officials.
In a statement, he said the census is among the country’s most important national data-collection exercises, aimed at generating detailed, accurate and reliable demographic, social, economic and housing data to support evidence-based policymaking, efficient governance and inclusive development.
The census in Tamil Nadu will be conducted in two phases. Self-enumeration will be available from July 17 to July 31, followed by house-listing operations from August 1 to August 30.
For the first time in the history of India’s census, citizens can complete self-enumeration through a secure website and mobile application, enabling families to fill in details online with ease. The Governor urged residents to make full use of this facility and ensure complete and accurate information is provided.
He added that households that do not opt for self-enumeration will be covered by enumerators during the house-listing phase. Calling it a national responsibility, he said public participation would strengthen the data base needed for future planning and development in the state and the country.
