Washington: US President Donald Trump has alleged that China stole data belonging to 220 million American voters, claiming it was aimed at influencing the outcome of the 2020 US election.

Speaking at an event at the White House, Trump said the episode shows Americans were misled for years about the security of the country’s election infrastructure. He argued that the system remains vulnerable to hacking and foreign interference.

Trump also warned that adversaries including Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, along with non-state groups, have the capability to disrupt US election systems. He described cyber threats as a growing risk to democracy.

Calling for steps to restore public confidence, Trump said every American should be assured their vote is properly counted. He urged passage of a new law requiring proof of US citizenship for voters and said a stronger system is needed to prevent fraud and interference.

China has denied the allegation, according to the report.
