A new bill proposing punishment for insulting the song ‘Vande Mataram’ or causing disruption during its rendition is set to be introduced in Parliament, according to reports.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 20 and continue until August 13. The government plans to table the proposed legislation on the first day of the session.

If introduced and passed, actions or conduct deemed to insult ‘Vande Mataram’ would be treated as an offence. The move is being positioned as an effort to strengthen patriotism and safeguard national unity.

Earlier, the Union Cabinet had approved the National Honour Insult Amendment Bill, which is linked to the proposed changes, the report noted.
