Burnham chosen to lead Labour
Andy Burnham has been elected leader of the UK’s Labour Party, paving the way for him to assume office as Prime Minister in the coming days.
Starmer steps down after setbacks
Labour returned to power after winning the July 2024 general election, with Keir Starmer becoming Prime Minister. However, public dissatisfaction grew amid an economic slowdown, sharp price rises and what were described as political missteps, culminating in a major Labour defeat in last month’s local elections.
Internal pressure and leadership change
Following the setback, pressure mounted on Starmer and opposition intensified within his own party. He announced he would resign as Prime Minister within two years of taking office and also stepped down as party leader.
Vote and next steps
Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester who also won the Makefield by-election, entered the leadership race and gained increasing support. At a meeting of Labour’s executive committee, he was elected leader with the backing of 379 members.
Five-point plan and meeting the King
After his selection, Burnham said he would present a five-point plan aimed at bringing change within the country and the party. He is expected to meet King Charles soon to seek the mandate to form the government.
