A programme titled “Pastors and Evangelists Meet”, organised by a federation of Christian churches, was recently held in Chennai. The event saw the participation of Speaker J.C.T. Prabhakar and minister Vanni Arasu.

The appearance drew criticism as Chief Minister Vijay has been publicly stressing that his party, Thaveka, does not differentiate on caste or religion. Following the controversy, Vijay issued a directive asking party members not to attend religion-based events with party identifiers.

He also warned that those violating the instruction would face party action.

Now, a “religious preachers’ conference” organised by a Christian church and pastors’ federation is scheduled in Chennai on August 5. Promotional material for the event lists Speaker Prabhakar, ministers Thennarasu, Kumar, Ranjithkumar and Sarathkumar, along with MLAs Rameshkumar, Prakasam and Pallavi, as participants.

The public listing of Thaveka leaders for the event has reignited debate on whether the Chief Minister’s warning is being ignored.
