India’s tour of England heads into a series decider, with the three-match ODI series level at 1-1 after two games. The third and final ODI is scheduled to be played at Lord’s in London.

According to reports, senior opener Rohit Sharma could retire from international cricket after the Lord’s match. Rohit has struggled for runs in the first two ODIs (11 and 26), and has scored 241 runs in his last eight ODIs at an average of 30.1 with a strike rate of 88.6.

The report also claims the Indian team management has spoken to Rohit about the decision. Rohit has already retired from Tests and T20Is, and the development would effectively end his hopes of featuring in next year’s 50-over World Cup.

There has been no official announcement from Rohit Sharma or the BCCI. Rohit, who debuted in ODIs against Ireland in Belfast in 2007, has amassed 11,757 runs in 287 ODIs, including 33 centuries and 62 fifties.

Rohit has captained India in 56 ODIs (42 wins, 12 losses, one tie and one no result), and led the side to the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Under his leadership, India also won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Separately, reports suggest selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar has played a key role in the move, more than head coach Gautam Gambhir, with an eye on giving opportunities to younger players. If Rohit steps away, Yashasvi Jaiswal is said to be a likely option to open.
