Tamil Nadu has started its population census-related work, introducing an online self-enumeration facility as the first step. The option allows residents to submit their personal details digitally, and is open until July 31.

To promote awareness, Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Vijay completed their own online registrations and appealed to the public to take part. The Governor said the census should be treated as a national responsibility and called on citizens to participate wholeheartedly.

He added that the exercise would strengthen the data base needed for future planning and development at both the state and national levels, and urged families to provide complete and accurate information while cooperating with census officials.

Chief Minister Vijay, after registering at the Secretariat in Chennai, said the census is essential for implementing future development plans and that the information provided forms the foundation for government schemes. He also assured that details would be kept confidential and asked all families to submit truthful information.

According to the announcement, families that do not use the self-enumeration facility can provide details during the door-to-door enumeration scheduled from August 1 to August 30. Nationwide census work is set to begin on February 1 next year.
