A controversial speech by Islamic cleric Maulana Jargees Ansari has triggered strong reactions after he claimed that Lord Krishna was a Muslim and offered prayers five times a day.
Speaking at a religious gathering in Jharkhand, Ansari said the Bhagavad Gita’s Chapter 6, Verse 10 supported his assertion and argued that Hindu scriptures reflect Islamic teachings. Hindu scholars and critics rejected the claim, saying the text does not state such ideas.
The remarks led to anger among Hindu groups, with several voices demanding legal action, alleging that religious sentiments were deliberately hurt. Lucknow Police in Uttar Pradesh have registered a case against the cleric and said he will be questioned.
Meanwhile, Maha Mandaleshwar Vishnu Das strongly condemned the cleric’s comments. Speaking to reporters in Ayodhya, he alleged the cleric had misinterpreted Sanskrit without basic knowledge.
Vishnu Das also announced that a reward of ₹10 lakh would be given to anyone who “cuts off” the cleric’s tongue, a statement that has added to the controversy surrounding the episode.
