The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Friday announced the 72nd National Film Awards for 2024 in Delhi, with the jury led by Jayaraj releasing the list of winners.

Malayalam star Mammootty was named Best Actor for Bramayugam. The awards also recognised Tamil cinema across multiple categories, with films such as Amaran, Captain Miller, Maharaja and Meiyazhagan featuring among the winners.

Rajkumar Periyasamy’s Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, won three National Film Awards—Best Director, Best Background Score (GV Prakash Kumar) and Best Editing (Kalaivanan).

In other Tamil highlights, the jury’s Special Award went to Prem Kumar’s Meiyazhagan, and Suran G was selected for Best Sound Mixing for the same film. Dhanush was chosen as the jury’s Best Actor for Captain Miller, which also won in the National/Social Change film category, while Raayan was selected as Best Tamil Film.

In the documentary segment, TS Harihara Suthan won for Best Sound Design for the Tamil documentary Blue.
