An all-party meeting was held in Delhi on July 19 ahead of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, which is scheduled to run from July 20 to August 13. The meeting was chaired by senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Union ministers including Amit Shah and Kiren Rijiju attended. Opposition representatives such as Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva and AIADMK’s Thambidurai were also present.
Tensions flared when disgruntled MPs from the Trinamool Congress attended the meeting, prompting strong objections from DMK, Congress, Samajwadi Party and other parties. Following the protest, DMK, Congress, Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties staged a walkout.
The BJP-led NDA government is expected to push key bills during the session, including the Women’s Reservation Bill, a constituency delimitation bill, the “One Nation, One Election” proposal, and amendments related to preventing insult to national honour. The government side urged opposition parties to raise constructive points and cooperate to ensure the session runs smoothly.
The INDIA bloc is also planning to raise issues such as the alleged NEET question paper leak and alleged irregularities in Ayodhya Ram temple donations, indicating the session could see heated exchanges.
