DMK has moved to raise the Mekedatu dam issue in Parliament by submitting an adjournment motion notice, seeking a detailed discussion in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
With the Monsoon Session set to begin on July 20, the party said the matter warrants immediate attention. The notices were filed by DMK’s parliamentary party leaders—T.R. Baalu in the Lok Sabha and Tiruchi Siva in the Rajya Sabha.
The issue centres on Karnataka’s push to build a new dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu. The move has drawn strong opposition from political parties in Tamil Nadu.
In the notice, DMK argued that Karnataka’s unilateral plan could severely affect the welfare of farmers in Tamil Nadu and pose a serious threat. The party urged that other business be set aside to take up an urgent, comprehensive debate on what it described as a key livelihood issue for the state.
