PUDUKKOTTAI: Tension surfaced in Keeranur area after residents opposed a newly approved stone quarry planned at Kannangudi village in Pudukottai district.
According to the information available, the quarry work is under way on about 715 acres of land owned by a Tiruchy-based person named Netaji, after obtaining government permission.
Residents of Kulavaipatti village, located around 800 metres from the proposed site and home to about 300 families, said the quarry could lead to pollution and affect agriculture and groundwater.
Unverified messages circulated on social media claiming villagers would lay siege to the house of Minister Prabhu at Nemathanpatti near Karaikudi. Following this, police in Sivaganga and Pudukottai districts stepped up monitoring.
During Minister Prabhu’s visit to the quarry site on Friday, women who gathered there tearfully urged him to cancel the licence. They fell at his feet and cried, after which the minister consoled them and sent them away.
